Explore the fun, dynamic, and unpredictable process of Raku firing! Learn how to make pieces that will be successful in raku firing and how to glaze for raku, as well as safe firing practices, surface experimentation, and how heat, atmosphere, and timing affect results. Students will learn the history and evolution of Raku, how raku glaze is formulated for low-fire rapid cooling, and the role of combustion and reduction chambers in creating crackle, metallic, and carbonized surfaces.
This course is for students with prior handbuilding or wheel experience who want to expand into alternative firing techniques.
